The fourth day of our Everest Base Camp trek greeted us with the promise of new heights to conquer. Knowing that we’re a slow-paced couple when it comes to trekking, we braced ourselves for a moderately difficult journey ahead. We were getting ready to ascend around 500 meters over the course of approximately 9 hours.
The concept of difficulty in mountain trekking struck me as we embarked on the uphill journey. The elevation gain makes all the difference – the steeper it gets, the harder each step becomes. It’s like defying gravity with every single stride, lifting our own weight with sheer determination.
Our day began at 7 am in Namche Bazaar after a hearty breakfast. Eager to capture every breathtaking moment, we relished the initial easy stretch through the Khumbu Valley. As expected, the visual delight kept us in high spirits through out. Our pit stop, Zambala, a restaurant about 4 hours away, awaited us, which was to be followed by a stop at the Tengbpche Monastery.

The trek’s pattern was familiar – the morning hours were kind, allowing us to capture the scenery in vibrant photos while we still brimmed with energy. However, post-lunch hours brought with them the anticipated uphill challenge. Despite the arduous climb, we covered the relatively easier 4-hour stretch to Zambala with collective determination. The hippie restaurant embraced us, offering a diverse menu that catered to our vegetarian preferences.
Lunch was a welcome refuel, and as the sun played hide-and-seek with the clouds, we forged ahead to Tengboche Monastery. The shift in terrain was palpable as we descended from the monastery, the landscape transforming beneath our feet.

Our overnight stay awaited us at Rivendell Hotel in Deboche . The food satisfied our hunger, and the prices were reasonable. The chilling temperatures were hovering around -3 degrees Celsius. This meant we had to get into our sleeping bags for warmth. A handy tip we discovered was the importance of a versatile sleeping bag. Ours was rated for temperatures down to 10 degrees Celsius, which meant we felt a chill, yet it was manageable.
Considering the brief halt in Deboche, we wasted no time and had our dinner early and went straight for our sleeping bags. As we drifted off into slumber, the promise of the adventure next day and the grandeur of Everest Base Camp kept us excited.
